PGIN bolsters Ilokano farmers with 6.3-ton tomato shipment
Published on: March 01, 2025By: Kenneth Dhovan NatividadThe Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN) facilitated the successful delivery of 6.3 tons of tomatoes from local farmers to an institutional buyer in Meycauayan, Bulacan, on February 24, providing critical support to strengthen agricultural trade.
The Sanjera Nagcarsuan Farmers Association, Inc. and Zanjera Naganakan Farmers Association, Inc. received fuel subsidies, 300 plastic crates to prevent spoilage, and free use of the government’s "KADIWA" truck, ensuring smooth and cost-effective transport.
“Gagawin namin ang lahat, at ibibigay ang kaya naming ibigay para mapabuti natin ang buhay ng ating mga mannalon (We will do everything we can to improve the lives of our farmers),” Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc said.
The associations welcomed the initiative, emphasizing its role in securing fair market prices. “This initiative greatly helps us sell our produce at a reasonable price. We hope this support continues,” they said.
In addition to marketing support, PGIN continues to bolster local agriculture by providing organic and inorganic fertilizers, foliar fertilizers, and post-harvest assistance. Last year, the province also inaugurated the Quality Tomato Production, Consolidation, Storage, and Marketing Enterprise Facility in Sarrat, equipping farmers with modern storage solutions to increase market value and reduce post-harvest losses.
Under Marcos Manotoc’s leadership, PGIN remains committed to expanding market opportunities and promoting sustainable agricultural initiatives for Ilokano farmers. Following this successful shipment, the associations are set to complete eight more deliveries to the same buyer in March, further strengthening market access and income stability for local growers.
