Published on: August 15, 2023By Kenneth Dhovan C. NatividadThe Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN), through the Ilocos Norte Tourism Office, in collaboration with the Second District Congressional Office and the Municipal Government of Pinili, officially inaugurated the Pinili Inabel Center in time for the 99th birthday celebration of Ilokano master weaver and National Living Treasure, Nana Magdalena Gamayo, in Pinili town, on August 13.
Inabel is a weaving tradition, particularly used to refer to textile that is distinctly Ilokano in origin, which is constantly being practiced by weavers in the province until today.
The Pinili Inabel Center was designed by PGIN, funded by the 2nd District Congressional Office, and implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways 2nd District Engineering Office. The Municipal Government of Pinili will be responsible for the center’s maintenance.
Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc continues to support projects that aim to uphold local products as it preserves the Ilokano heritage and generates economic opportunities for many communities.
The center, formerly known as the Gawad Manlilikha ng Bayan Center, is a testament to the government's dedication to revitalizing and preserving the traditional craft of weaving.
It has an area of 90 square meters and is approximately 25 feet high up to the ceiling, and Php 8 million was allocated to complete the project.
The center will serve as a display center and museum, with weaving materials that will allow tourists to experience the making of inabel, encouraging them to buy the products.
It will also provide a venue for aspiring weavers from the different municipalities of the province to train and improve their skills.
The establishment of a weaving center is expected to sustain the commitment of the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte, under the leadership of Gov. Marcos Manotoc, to safeguarding the province's cultural identity, elevating its weaving traditions, and strengthening Ilocos Norte's position as a premier cultural and heritage destination.
